Talent Search & Upward Bound

Talent Search and Upward Bound are free programs available to our students (eligibility requirements apply).  In addition to other services, they visit our students once a month for tutoring in core academic subjects.  For more information on the programs visit the Upward Bound Talent Search website, or contact me for details.

  • Talent Search is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education to encourage students and non-students to complete high school and to pursue a college education.  Educational, cultural, and social experiences throughout the year help us to accomplish this goal.
  • Upward Bound at Virginia Tech is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education as well and is designed to encourage and prepare high school students to pursue a college education. Upward Bound accomplishes this goal through educational, cultural, and social experiences.

Representatives from the programs will be here to speak with our PE classes on Monday, May 13th.

Art Show Reception

The Giles County Schools Art Show reception will be held at Narrows High School tomorrow, Wednesday, May 7 at 6:00. Come out and celebrate our talented artists!

Senior Pictures – College

Seniors, Giles County received a grant to promote the county called “Live, Work, Play.” As part of this, the two high schools will take a picture of their seniors, wearing a shirt representing the college they are going to attend (2 year or 4 year college).  In order to do so we need a list of all seniors, where you are going to college, and your t-shirt size.

Stop by the office TODAY to give us your college information.

Advisory on Kindness

Today in advisory students will discuss the concept of kindness, and paying it forward . Kindness, while a simple concept in theory, is often overlooked in our day to day lives. Advisory groups are being asked to generate one idea of kind behaviors that they can display to others. Throughout the month of May we will focus on demonstrating these ideas.

The kickoff activity that students will participate in during advisory is kindness towards those in their advisory group, by sharing positive statements about one another. I encourage the NHS community to continue this practice both in and out of school (students, teachers, and parents alike). As we near the end of the school year, it is easy to become bogged down and stressed out by exams, grades, SOLs, sports, etc. One simple way to manage stress is by showing kindness to others, by doing so less focus is placed on your self, and more on improving others quality of life.

When you see kindness in the community, post about it here, send me a message, or stop by my office to share.

We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery, we need humanity. More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness.  - Charlie Chaplin (1889-1977)

When we feel love and kindness toward others, it not only makes others feel loved and cared for, but it helps us also to develop inner happiness and peace. - The 14th Dalai Lama (1935)
